Female, shar-pei mix, 5 years old and 65 pounds
UPDATE 1/21/26
Betty was in foster care for almost 3 months, and only returned to the shelter because her foster mom had a medical issue to deal with. Betty is hypervigilant, possibly due to some trauma. She initially is very shy and withdrawn, shutting down in new environments, however, when she first arrived in foster, it only took a couple of days before she came when called, and went straight into her crate, which is her safe space.
She hangs out with a couple of the other dogs, but doesn't initial contact. Once a routine is established, she follows it without problem.
She walks ok on leash, but again, is constantly looking around to make sure she's safe. It will take some time for her to develop trust in a human, but once she does, she feels more secure. She is able to bond, and has sat on the couch with her foster mom, putting her head on mom's lap. Betty is a home-body. The best home for her would be one that is predictable, calm, and peaceful.
Betty is a quiet soul with the softest eyes and the gentlest heart. Found abandoned, underweight, and suffering from skin issues, this 5-year-old girl has already been through so much. But thanks to some much-needed care and kindness, Betty is finally starting to heal — both inside and out.
She’s still learning that people can be good and that the world doesn’t have to be so scary. Right now, she’s a bit shy and reserved, preferring to observe from a safe distance as she takes everything in. But with time, patience, and a calm environment, we know she’ll blossom into a loyal, loving companion.
We’re still getting to know Betty, but what we do know is that she deserves a forever home that will love her unconditionally and give her all the time she needs to feel safe and secure.
If you have a quiet home, a gentle heart, and the patience to let Betty come out of her shell at her own pace — she just might be your perfect match. 💕
