DUTTON

Husky, NEUTERED male, 1 year old and 60 pounds

Dutton is mellow for a Husky; This dapper young gent enjoys playing and going for walks. Dutton has great leash manners and is easy to walk. We think Dutton would enjoy a canine friend to play with in his forever home, and will make a great family dog. Our intrepid volunteer, Angela told us that Dutton walks really well on leash and patiently waits in his kennel to get leashed up and go out. This guy is a stunner, so if you are a Husky fan, get down to the shelter ASAP!

RIP

Mixed Breed NEUTERED male, 1 year and 55-ish pounds

FIDO FIELD TRIP UPDATE! Our wonderful volunteer Angela took her favorite dog, RIP, out on a Fido Field Trip. Here's what she told us: "Rip is my favorite dog at the shelter, and the more time I spend with him, the more I learn about him, and get to see his wonderful self. I took Rip to the lake and he loved watching the ducks swim and geese fly by. There were people and dogs of all ages passing by and he didn’t seem to be bothered by any of them. People were commenting on him how happy he looked and they loved his markings. Of course I told them he’s available for adoption! He rode well in a crate in my car, we did lots of hiking and walking around, and then sat watching the water, giving him some quiet and peaceful time. It did him good. I hope someone considers meeting him. Those that aren't are missing out a really good dog."

We love all of our dog and cat guests...but our wonderful volunteers sometimes fall head over heels in love with a certain, special dog. And Rip is the lucky recipient of that love from one of our great volunteers--Angela. Here's what she told us about RIP: "My little buddy Rip needs a home! He is wound up tight in his kennel. He’s about a year old, neutered and an avid ball fetcher. I spend a couple days a week with him. He loves to play ball! That’s all he wants to do. After I tire him, out we practice walking on leash because he likes to pull. Pocket full of treats and a clicker has been helping him realize he doesn’t need to act like a sled dog haha! This guy is super fun, energetic, treat motivated, knows basic commands, dog friendly (don’t know about cats), & also has a loving side to him too. With the proper training and secured fencing (he can jump!) I can see him being a terrific family dog. You can meet him at the Shelter!" THANK YOU, ANGELA!

Rip is so friendly and sweet with people he knows and is comfortable with. He can be worried about meeting some new people, but can be bribed with treats, and THEN he becomes their new BFF. An ideal guardian for Rip would be an experienced dog owner who can do basic training and help Rip gain confidence—i.e. by taking him out to experience new environments and meet new people and going to dog classes. Rip is playful and puppy-like with toys and very dog friendly. He appears playful (rough and rowdy) with other dogs, so a canine friend with a similar play style would be ideal.

ANWAR

Mixed Breed NEUTERED male, 7 years young and 57 adorable pounds.

HANDSOME ANWAR is in a great foster home, and he looks like he's having a WONDERFUL time. Out of his kennel and onto a beautiful, comfy and soft bed, this sweet dog is fitting right in. Here's what his foster folks told us: "Anwar's first night went well. He is eating good, had a bath and has bonded to me very quickly. He made himself right at home on my bed, but slept on his dog bed all night. As expected he is adjusting to his new surroundings. But his tail is always wagging and seems happy. Will keep you posted on him."

There are so many benefits to adopting a mature dog—for example: Anwar is over his “chewing stage”, he’s mellow and really enjoys napping! Anwar still loves going out for walks, but also likes his couch time! He’s a smart boy who has had some training and know sit and shake (both paws.) Although he is a love once he knows you, it takes him a few minutes to become comfy with some folks. A mellow quiet home would be ideal for this senior gent. Anwar is eligible for the shelter’s Senior Dog Discount.

DARBY

Darby is a special 9 month old boy needing a special home.

Darby was found as a stray in Covelo. He came to Ukiah Shelter terrified and malnourished. It seems obvious that what little human interaction he had was not positive. Darby has been in his current foster home for almost 3 months and he has made some progress. For the first three or four days, his foster mom had to carry Darby everywhere. He now freely walks on a leash in the yard and he comes out of his crate on his own. He has also started exploring the house a little bit here and there.

Darby did not eat the first couple of days. Once he did, he would eat in his crate super fast and give himself hiccups. His foster mom switched him to a slow-feeder bowl, and is trying to get him acclimated to eating outside of his crate and there have been improvements with that also. Initially, any physical contact caused Darby to cower. Nowadays Darby is enjoying physical affection more and more, especially when he is on the couch or on the bed with his foster Mom.

Darby is good with the small senior dogs and the senior cats in the home. It's likely that Darby will chase a cat if it runs, but it would be from playfulness and not from aggression. He very much wishes that the other animals would play with him and will try to initiate play. Now that Darby’s foster mom is more aware of his schedule, habits, and signals, his potty-training is going well. His adoptive home will need to be vigilant and observant. Darby is being crate-trained and able to sleep through the night without needing to go outside for about 7 hours.

Because Darby was so malnourished, he still has almost all of his puppy teeth, and is still teething and needs to chew things. It will be important for his adopter to supply him with appropriate chew toys and bully sticks.

Darby is learning about walking outside on leash. He's still fearful about traffic, etc, and right now, the best times for walks are when it's quiet outside. Darby can become overwhelmed outdoors and his foster Mom is trying different approaches to help him. He may get used to it, or it may be that he is just going to be a homebody dog!

Darby needs a quiet, calm, and patient home. His adopter needs to be willing and able to give him the time and tools to become the best version of himself. Darby is going to be a long-term project for someone in continuing his journey toward accepting kindness and love from people. Having an adopter that is either retired or works from home would be hugely ideal for him.

Because Darby seems to feel more comfort and kinship towards animals, being in a home with another dog would definitely help him come out of his shell and having a dog that is an appropriate playmate for him will really help him blossom.

OPAL

Mixed Breed SPAYED female, 3 years old and 78 merry pounds

Opal is happy girl who loves to play with toys. She walks well on leash and enjoys getting out and about on walks. When Opal was in the meet and greet room, she was mellow and greeted everyone at the door to say hello. Afterwards, she enjoyed a good nap on the couch! What’s not to love???!!!

RASCAL

Male, mixed breed, 2 years old and 53 pounds

Rascal is a handsome, happy boy! When he came to us as a stray, he had some skin and eye issues, but our clinic is taking the best care of him, and he is feeling so much better! When in our adoption room, he was happy to see new faces, and would show them his supper awesome zoomie skills! We introduced him to another female dog, and he was all play, so could possibly go to a home with another k9 buddy! Rascal is a supper good boy, but we recommend basic obedience and daily exercise to keep him happy and healthy!

BEEFCAKE - COURTESY POST

Male, staffy/bulldog mix, 1 year old and stout 60 pounds!

Beefcake is one hunk of a dog! He's very sweet, quiet, and gentle. He loves hanging out in the sun, and when it gets too hot, he moves to the shade. He's really a no-fuss dog, very low maintenance. He enjoys his daily walks. He initially is very excited and pulls, but he calms down and does well on leash. He takes treats with a slobber, but is gentle. He's perfecting his "sit" and hopefully we'll be able to move on to another command, but he's in no rush. He has good indoor manners, and can be left alone in the house without problem. He's doing well with another low-key older dog here, but doesn't really want to play with our year old pup, who's very active. The best home for Beefcake would be one that just wants to give him his best life - hanging out and going for walks, plus lots of love. To find out more about this totally wonderful dog, contact Laura at 707.391.4043. He is being fostered through Animal Rescue of Anderson Valley

COURTESY POST--INDIO

FROM INDIO’S GUARDIAN Meet Indio - he is 100lbs of LOVE! Indio is a 5-6 year old, neutered, American Bulldog. Mr. I loves to be close by at all times. He should probably be the only dog in the house based on his past, but he has not been dog reactive with us when on leash. He doesn’t seem prey driven either, but he hasn’t been around cats with us. He does great on leash and he’s really very mellow. We rescued him so he wouldn’t be put down in Glenn County, but we are committed to fostering now, so we want to find him a good home. No adoption fee. IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT, OR MEETING INDIO, PLEASE CALL AMY AT THE UKIAH SHELTER: 467-6453 OR INDIO'S GUARDIAN AT (530)277-5891.
