**Queensland Heeler, 5 years old NEUTERED male 78 pounds

CCC TRANING UPDATE: Michael found himself involved in a shelter training class on 10.5.19. He doesn't seem to have had any training, but was very excited to be out of his kennel. His handler worked with him to stay calm and focused, which was a challenge for him. He went on a pack walk, and did ok on leash and around the other dogs. His new family should consider taking him to a training class to help him be the best dog he can be.

Michael is an easy going dog. He's got some soulful peepers, that's for sure. Queensland Heelers, also known as the Australian Cattle Dog, are incredible working dogs, and boy, are they smart. Here's what the American Kennel Club says about the Queensland: This breed is a sturdy, hard-muscled herder of strength and agility. Queensland Heelers have immense work drive and excel at hunting, chasing, and, of course, moving livestock. Their boundless energy and supple gait make them excellent running partners. They are true-blue loyal, famously smart, ever alert, and wary of strangers. If these dogs aren't challenged, they can easily become bored and get into mischief. It is recommended that ACD owners participate with their dog in some work, sport, or regular exercise to keep him mentally and physically fit. These resilient herders are intelligent enough to routinely outsmart their owners.

Mixed Breed SPAYED female, 2 years old and a svelte 49 pounds

UPDATE 10.5--Tina was in a shelter training group on 10.5.19. She remained calm and focused around the 11 other dogs and handlers. She has perfected her "sit" and was able to make eye contact with her handler with the word "look". She was also able to track treats tossed away from her with the command "find it," then return to a sit position in front of the handler. Tina seemed to be able to pick this up pretty quickly, which is a good indicator of her being a fast learner. She went on a pack walk and did well on leash. She would undoubtedly excel in a training class with her new family.

This sweet dog is a shy gal. Tina knows sit and gives kisses. Tina found hersefl at the shelter when her human companion died. Now Tina is looking for a new home with a new human who likes to cuddle! (we KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE!!!) Tina would like to be your only dog.

PACK WALKING AND TRAINING UPDATE: Jetta participated in both the pack walk and training on 10.12.19. The volunteers from the CCC worked with her and other dogs. Here are some observations: JETTA pulled on leash and was easily distracted, however she took treats with a gentle mouth. She made some progress on “sit,” “look” (at me), and “find it” (tossing treat a couple feet away from her). She was treat motivated, which made it easier to work with her. She’s very energetic, but began responding to commands, which indicates she has a desire to learn.

Jetta is a sweet and very lovable dog. During her evaluation, Jetta met another female dog and she reacted very well. Check back for updates, as we get to know this sweetie pie!

Mixed Breed NEUTERED male, 10 years young and 72 pounds.

Fido Fido Field Trip 9/28

Buddy came to my house 9/29 and he was a good boy riding in the car did need a little help getting in as it’s a big jump! Upon arrival at our ranch Buddy couldn’t believe all the smells and was totally involved in just being out and about. He acted appropriately when meeting my 4 dogs all large breeds. Even my older large male liked Buddy, later in the afternoon they napped close to one another. Buddy did also use the dog door, he seemed to know what that was about. He did try to mark in the house a couple of times but I do have several dogs that live inside.

Buddy met a couple of my cats and was “very” interested. Interesting because at the shelter he could have cared less about the kittens in cages. He was not good with the dog savy cats here so I would say Buddy needs a cat free home. He did see chickens and some horses as well and had no reaction (they are behind fences though).

I left him in the house for a short time and found him curled up on the couch snoozing. He had a marrow bone before we left and let me put his leash on and get him away from it which I thought very nice behavior. Buddy is a sweet, calm and mellow boy who would love to be part of a family again.

FIDO FIELD TRIP 9/26 I got to go on one of those wonderful FFTs today. I LOVED it. As an older guy I was an easy companion. My human, Jason, helped me get into his car. Then we went on a walk. I was tired so next we went to his house for a nap. We went to the the park. I got tired quickly, so back to his house we went for another nap. Jason said my snoring was very sweet and not loud at all.

This is a charming, older fellow found himself at the shelter when his guardian passed away. Buddy loves to play with toys, he is easy to walk on a leash, and would love a warm bed to curl up in when you are not out taking him for a leisurely walk. There's something wonderful about the older dogs--their calm demeanor and quiet ways. Got a soft spot in your heart for the senior dogs? Come to the shelter and meet Buddy.

FIDO FIELD TRP 9/10 Today this dog who NEVER stops wiggling his stubby tail went on yet another FFT with long time FFT human, Jason. He played toss the tennis ball, was reported to be affectionate, energized and friendly

Fido Field Trip 9/7 Black Jack got to go on another filed trip and his report card shined with postive comments. He thopought it was great and said, "I went to the Barkery and loved it. I also visited a stero store and enjoyed the musci! I liked palying at my FFT human's house. I ran all over the back yard. She said when I was in the house I was a very good boy! I, for sure, come highly recommended."

BLACK JACK Went on another Fido Field Trip with volunteers Billy and Kaitlyn. Here are their notes: Black Jack loads and unloads in a vehicle and loves to ride. We went to the park, where he loved walking in the grass and exploring the areas. He was friendly with a French Bulldog that he met. They wanted to go play but we had lunch in mind. He waited patiently for his puppy cup which he gulped up in record time. Yes he liked it. We stopped at Rainbow Ag where he met a kitten that he greeted nicely and was not interested in. He got to pick out a treat before heading back. He picked a dried freeze turkey neck which he enjoyed back in his kennel. Black Jack is one of the most affectionate dogs I have taken. So full of love and just always so happy. His nub tail literally never stops wagging. He would be a good dog for anyone to take on a Fido Field trip.

FIDO FIELD TRIP 8/31: Black Jack's FIDO FIELD TRIP (FFT) certainly showed what a undiscovered treasure this boy is. He went to Rainbow Ag and meet both dogs and a cat. He was quite the gentleman! His travleing humann said," Black Jack is great loading and unloading into a vechile and loved the ride. He is very social and outgoing. He loved walking on the grass at the park and enjoyed a 'Puppy Cup' He was good about sitting and waiting for this special treat." Black Jack comes highly recomended as family dog and as a FFT companion.

Just look at this guy's adorable mug! BJ is a sweet dog. He's easy-going and tolerant of other dogs. We can't wait to get to know him and spend time with him, so check back here for observations and updates.

Mixed Breed (we think there's Doberman in there!) NEUTERED male, 3 years old and 72 pounds.

Bruno participated in the monthly pack walk and a play group afterwards, on 10.12.19. On the walk, he did well on leash, and he listened and paid attention. He took treats with a gentle mouth. He was described as “loyal and kind.” In the play group, he engaged appropriately with the other dogs.

My, what big ears you have, Bruno! This very handsome dog was surrendered to the shelter when his family could not afford his medical care. Bruno has a skin issue, but with treatment, it has already improved. Bruno lived with children and was house trained in his last home. He was tolerant when meeting a playful male dog. We'll be taking this daper dude out for walks and off leash romps in our play yards, so check back for updates! Fido Field Trip Update 8/24/19 During Brunos Fido Field Trip he completley won over the hearts of the lovely couple who took him out. Bruno got to go on a drive to Lake Mendocino and did very well in the car. Later, he went to Willits and enjoyed time at Mariposas 40th year celebration. Bruno did very well in crowds and remained very calm throughout. Bruno was described as well trained, good with crowds and kids, and responds to sit and stay. FIDO FIELD TRIP 9/5/19 Bruno goes on a FFT and people fall in love. This is what his last companion said, "Bruno is amazing. He's the most well manner dog of ll the many dogs I have teken on FFT's. He loves getting pets. He met a small dog in the park and was happy to meet him. He rested for a while in the park.

Mixed Breed NEUTERED male, 6 years old and 61 pounds.

Arlo participated in the monthly pack walk and training on 10.12.19. He pulled a bit on leash, but was able to also walk nicely. He was able to listen and pay attention at least half the time. He took treats with a gentle mouth. He knows “sit,” and needs more work on other skills. He did tire during the training, and lost interest in treats.

Mr. Good Looking, AKA ARLO, spent time at CASA de LAURA. Here's Laura's report: Arlo got a much needed break from shelter life when he got to visit Casa de Laura. He loaded up easily into the truck, and was a good passenger. He is a good boy, but does need basic training. He is strong, and pulls when on leash; needs work on coming when called, and needs to work on his manners with female dogs, as he got a little carried away the two girls he met! He wandered about the yard, interested in the various smells, and marking territory. He was easy to be around, and seemed very relaxed. He came into the house easily, and displayed good indoor manners. When it was time to go, he leashed up easily. The best home for him would be one in which his new family would be interested in taking him to training and be consistent in working with him. Below are a few photos of Arlo chillin' at the CASA.

FIDO FIELD TRIP 8/29 I go to go to the park today It was a lot of fun. I went with an old time friend Ariel who I use to live wiht. The human I travle on my adventure wiht said I was very energetic on our walk together. She also said I was a loving boy! Wow what a compliment!

Arlo arrived at the shelter with several other similarly-colored dogs, who we are calling the "A" dogs. They all appear to have missed out on training, and they're all a little bit shy and getting to know lots of people and learning that the leash = fun! We think Arlo would fit best in a family with no young children. We took Arlo out for his photo session, and he was easy to leash up, but he pulls, and he is strong! He's a happy dog and likes to be involved in any action going on around him. We think he's housetrained. Arlo is a fan of getting butt scratches, and he's a loving dog. This guy needs some fattening up, and that will work out well when he starts training! (Ask us for information about dog classes in Ukiah.) Arlo is bilingual, and he sat for us in both English and Spanish!

Mixed breed spayed female, 8 years old and 100+- pounds.

KIA is with one of our rescue partners. She is NOT at the shelter She can be met by appointment after an application is submitted. This BIG girl is playful and almost dances sometimes! Kia is easy to leash up, knows sit and loves her treats! In her former home, Kia lived with children. When Kia participated in our multi-dog play group, she reacted well around our other guests. But, Kia had problems with female dogs in her last neighborhood, and we therefore want her to meet any potential rommmates. During her photo shoot, Kia started out a little shy and aloof, and warmed up after a some minutes and showed us her playful side. Mixed Breed NEUTERED male, 4 years old and 50 pounds.

UPDATE: This uber handsome, freckled nose gent is Asher--a shy dog who is under the loving care of Sara--one of the shelter's teen volunteers. Sara's been spending lots of time with our shy dogs, and Asher has been the recipient of her patience and TLC. When we spent time with him during his photo session, we found him VERY lovable, pleasant and sweet.

Adorable Asher is a very shy dog who perked up when he saw another dog. He lived with 7 other dogs in his last home! Check back for updates as we get to know Asher.

On June 21st Asher went on this first FIDO FIELD TRIP (FFT) Asher is one of our shy dogs. But under the guidance of our wonderful volunteer Billy, Asher was off and ready to expore the world beyond the shelter. Once picked up and put in the car he seemed happy and relaxed during the ride. He went to a park, the lake and to Bill's home. Billy said the biggest challenge was Asher's fear of new people. There was not any agrression, but it is clear it takes a little time for Asher to warm up to people he has just met. An unexpected event happened at Billy's house. His cat and Asher met and enjoyed being with each other!

Asher starts off on his Fido Field Trip adventure with Billy.

Mixed Breed SPAYED female, 2 years old and 55 pounds.

APPLE GOES TO CASA DE LAURA Ms. Apple has been spending time at CASA DE LAURA, and Laura sent us this update: Apple came to foster on 7.24.19, and currently lives with 6 other dogs with whom she gets along. She was initially shy, but has made good progress and is now able to go up to people on her walks to say “hi” and enjoys a pet. She can be very sweet as well as stubborn at times. Apple is crate trained, housebroken. She knows “sit” and is working on other obedience skills, and she as good indoor skills. Apple likes to hang out in her crate, but I prefer she hang out with everyone else in the evening. She finds a dog bed to get comfy on, and stays there until it’s time to go out for a last night time pee, then into her crate for the night. She walks well on-leash after she gets going. It can be a little challenging for her to start, but responds to encouragement. She also freaks out a bit when a vehicle passes, stopping and pancaking down. Apple doesn’t really know how to play, but is starting to learn with a couple of the younger dogs in her foster home. She and her new family should continue training together in order for her to be the best dog she can be.

PHOTO SHOOT NOTES: Delightful, elegant, attractive and appealing--Apple is a lover! She was no problem at all leashing up and walking. In the play yard, she was friendly and a real charmer! And talk about cute!

The apple of our eye, Apple is an easy going girl. Right now, Apple is a bit overwhelmed and shy, but we bet after going out with our volunteers, she will feel a whole lot better! Check back for updates on this sweet, young dog.

Mixed Breed ANGEL female, 3 years old and 66 pounds.

CASA DE LAURA UPDATE: Sweet Angel came to foster care on 9.19.19, and lives with 6 other dogs, one of whom is probably her sister. They lived with 6 other dogs who all came in to the shelter together and look alike. Most of them were under socialized and as a result, are shy. Although Angel is shy, she is brave, and has been eating her dinner out of my hand, which helps with her trust issues, and bonding. During her first day in foster, she was initially very skittish and kept away from me. I ignored her, and she eventually came around to me when some of the other dogs were around me. She initially didn’t want to go in a crate, but by the evening when all the dogs were relaxing and on their dog beds, she chose a crate, went inside, and got comfy.

Angel is now crate trained, house broken, walks well on a leash, knows her name and comes when called. She has perfected her SIT, and is working on her other obedience skills here at the Casa! Angel loves to play and rides well in a vehicle. She sits politely at the door before coming in our going out. And, she LOVES getting face and body massages!

Angel is a smart gal, and has learned “look,” “what’s this?” and “find it,” all good skills that encourage tracking and focusing. The best home for Angel would be one in which there’s a confident dog who’s looking for a playmate, and humans with plenty of patience to help her build her own self-confidence. We always recommend a training class so the dog and his/her new family learn to work together, bond, and live happily ever after! Check out the photos of Angel at the CASA de LAURA below!

Fido Field Trip Update: On 6/15/19 I got to go out on the town with Billy! I loved riding in the car, Billy had to help me with loading up. He had a full day planned for us: We went to In and Out for lunch, then we went to the lake and the park. When it started to get warm We headed for the AC at Rainbow Ag. I even made a new friend while I was there and got a ton of love. I think that was my favorite part; getting to be loved on and snuggled. I cant wait to go out again!

The most striking thing for us in looking at the Fido Field Trip (FFT) photos is the marked difference between her "official" webiste photo and the FFT's ones. Angel came to the shelter with 7 siblings. She (like her siblings) was shy and nervous. Look at her now! Bill's FFT photo show us a dogs who is relaxed and so vey happy to be on an adventure! Special thanks go to our dedicated volunteer Billy for taking her oout for the day!

Pretty Angel found herself at the shelter with 3 of her housemates. Right now, she is shy and a bit worried. Angel lived in a home with seven other dogs! We'll be working with Angel, spending time with her and helping her feel more secure. Please check back soon for updates.
